Are crowns and bridges the same thing?

Crowns and bridges are both dental restorations, but they have different functions:

Crowns

A crown covers a damaged or decaying tooth, restoring its shape, size, and appearance. The Club Atlantis Dental team uses tooth-colored crowns made of porcelain and ceramic. These crowns blend in with your tooth enamel and look natural.

Bridges

A dental bridge fills a gap in your smile where a permanent tooth used to be. Bridges include an artificial tooth and two crowns or a metal framework. The crowns or metal framework hold the bridge in place and prevent it from shifting.

After an oral exam and X-rays, the Club Atlantis Dental team makes personalized treatment recommendations.

Does getting crowns and bridges take multiple appointments?

Yes. Getting a crown or a bridge at Club Atlantis Dental takes at least two visits.

Crowns

Your Club Atlantis Dental provider completes an oral exam and takes digital X-rays. You might qualify for a crown if you have a severely decaying or damaged molar.

Your provider removes the compromised portion of tooth enamel and takes virtual impressions. They send your impressions to a dental lab that creates a custom crown from porcelain or ceramic.

You return to Club Atlantis Dental when your crown is finished. Your provider bonds it on top of your tooth, checks your bite, and explains how to care for it.

Bridges

If you need a bridge, your Club Atlantis Dental provider removes a small amount of enamel from the two abutment teeth on either side of the gap. They take virtual tooth impressions and share them with a dental lab that creates a custom bridge.

You return to the office when the lab completes your bridge. Your Club Atlantis Dental provider bonds the dental bridge to your abutment teeth, checks your bite, and provides care instructions.

After getting a crown or bridge, there’s no downtime. It’s okay to return to work and other activities immediately following your visit.

How long will crowns and bridges last?

Crowns and bridges usually last 12-15 years*, but they can last longer if you take good care of them. The Club Atlantis Dental team recommends brushing and flossing daily, visiting the office every six months for preventive dentistry, and never biting on hard objects like ice cubes.
